What is the Dou-sa Method (動作法)?
The Dou-sa Method is a Japanese body-oriented psychotherapy developed by Professor Gosaku Naruse, a pioneer in clinical psychology. Originating in the 1960s, the method focuses on the therapeutic integration of intentional movement and inner awareness. Rather than aiming for physical precision or performance, the approach invites individuals to mindfully explore simple movements while attending to the bodily sensations, emotional responses, and internal changes that arise.
In the Dou-sa Method, healing is not achieved through verbal analysis but through direct embodied experience. Movements such as lifting an arm, shifting weight, or simply standing still become opportunities to reconnect with one's sense of self, especially for those whose natural responses have been disrupted by trauma, chronic stress, or social conditioning.
This method is particularly effective for individuals dealing with dissociation, psychosomatic symptoms, anxiety, or difficulty with emotional expression. It is widely used in trauma-informed care and somatic psychotherapy settings in Japan.
